Revd Dr Hazel Aucken has a busy career in the South of England. She is the Interim Priest-in-Charge (0.75 FTE) of the parishes of Chipping Ongar with Shelley, Greensted juxta Ongar and Stanford Rivers and with pastoral oversight of Moreton and Bobbingworth. She attended St Hild College from 2017 to 2019 and completed a postgraduate diploma.
When she reminiscences about her time at St Hild, she feels the Bible and Context module in particular prepared her for ministry today. ‘During a discussion on the author’s intent versus the reader’s response, a lightbulb moment opened my eyes to the fact that not only am I a “both/and” person but being one and not always having firm opinions can actually be a good thing. Throughout my time at St Hild, the reinforcement of the message that it’s not only okay, but is a blessing to be who I am has really helped me confront my classic female imposter syndrome. That module also taught me the vital importance of context in scripture and being able to explain this to others has helped so many who have questions, especially about the Old Testament.’
Though she juggles full-time hours within her part-time role, Hazel is excited to be an agent of change in her area. She is one of a small team of clergy and lay ministers meeting monthly to work out how to minister to 17 rural churches with 2.5 FTE stipends and 1 House-for-duty post. She sees her personal gifting in ‘ad-ministry’ and her former role as a parish administrator as strengths. Hazel explains, ‘The Church of England needs more individuals in the role of administration in order to release time for ordained and lay persons alike to provide the ministry that will lead to church growth and renewal.’
Another highlight for Hazel has been instilling hope and joy, not least through her ‘I know a God who can’ attitude as well as activities like ‘praise balloons’. ‘During the playing of Handel’s Messiah, the congregation must stop any balloon from touching the ground and shout “Hallelujah!” whenever they touch one. This works even with no children present, and it is wonderful to see adults rediscover their inner child!’
One of her current personal support systems is her St Hild ministry formation group. ‘We keep in touch through a WhatsApp group and still support each other, especially when we need prayer.’ She added, ‘I can’t recommend St Hild highly enough if you are thinking of study because you will not only get the support you need but you will also experience a lot of hope and joy.’
